Life in the Mandali
L ife in the mandali was very smooth. We used to bathe daily in the Yamuna River, and the routine sadhana was going well. But I was not satisfied with the sadhana as I used to still be left with a lot of free time. I thought it was time to begin my sixth purascharan in Srividya . But first I needed to know for how many more days the mandali would stay there. I was informed it would be for more than four months and they would move only after the end of ‘chaturmas’ . It was good and encouraging information for me. Shivanandaji told me that two days later was Ashtami day and that I could start my purascharan .
Early on ashtami morning I went to the Yamuna River and after bathing there, I took the sankalpa for Srividya shodashi purascharan for 90 days. On these purascharan days I used to consume only milk and fruit. Even though I was never in the habit of taking milk regularly (as I had never liked milk since childhood), during purascharans I would take a glass of milk in the morning and evening each day and few of whatever fruits were available that day.
There was a devotee there, one Attar Chand, a very pious person. He was a wholesale merchant dealing in wheat, rice and dal. He would come to all of us usually asking whether we needed anything. And to my wonder he would cook for the sadhus , leaving his brother to take care of his business.
The japa purascharan days went very well. I was very happy to get a chance to do my japa sadhana on the banks of the Yamuna.
One day the Swamiji from Jammu came to me to say that he would be going to his village after chaturmas . He added, “Please come with me. You will like my village. You can stay in my cottage and let us go for the Vaishno Devi darshan once. As you are a bhakta of Mata you must visit Vaishno devi.”
I had also heard about the Vaishno Devi Mandir earlier and wanted to go there for darshan. When I said that I would accompany him after completion of my japa sadhana , my words made that old Swamiji very happy.
I completed my purascharan in time, in 90 days. After concluding the japa , Attar Chand arranged for a homa and a special feeding for the sadhus . (Being a sanyasi I was not supposed to perform homa but with the help of two brahmacharis at the mandali, I did the homa on the banks of the Yamuna.)
Somehow my mind was reluctant to go to Jammu to the village of that old Swamiji . But he kept insisting again and again that I must accompany him, and one day with the permission of Shivanandaji and the head of the mandali , I started for his village along with him.
In those days there used to be a daily train between Dehradun and Jammu.
